Ask Sally: Dilemma over Las Vegas wedding

Taste for Travel’s agony aunt Sally Slaughter answers queries on travel etiquette, ethics and dilemmas in her column Ask Sally. Inquiries: info@tastefortravel.com.au

Dear Sally, After a phenomenal one-night stand, Harriet convinced me to elope and run away to Las Vegas with our pet chihuahuas to get married. Harriet has stars in her eyes, or maybe that’s the neon lights blazing 24/7 in Sin City, but anyway, she can’t wait to tie the knot. She’s out shopping for a wedding dress as I type, with a matching ensemble for her dog. She threw my mobile phone into the Bellagio Fountains so I can’t contact anyone I know. She’s booked a hotel in Palm Springs for the honeymoon. I think I’m getting cold feet. I’m not sure Harriet is the full deck of cards. Please help! Yours sincerely, Barry.

Dear Barry,
For heaven’s sake, stop being a wimp and go buy yourself another phone. I did some hasty research. Las Vegas is the world centre for quickie weddings. Marry in haste, repent at leisure my grandmother used to say. But now there’s a new angle – a pop-up wedding chapel where you can try out being married to see if you like it. Or not. Or if you really want your pet chihuahuas to get hitched, they can do that too.

Situated in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, The Pop-Up Wedding Chapel at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas offers visitors and locals alike a twist on the classic Sin City wedding. On offer: A traditional marriage, vow renewal, commitment ceremony, pet wedding or a faux-wedding. The wedding chapel’s street level location also gives passersby the chance to join in the festivities.

“The Cosmopolitan’s new Pop-up Wedding Chapel is a new twist on a Las Vegas tradition, the impromptu wedding,” Lisa Marchese, the chief marketing officer, told me. “Whether you want to come in and renew your vows, get hitched or even just try marriage on for 24 hours with a faux ceremony – it will undoubtedly be a memorable experience.”

The chapel’s retail space includes items such as wedding bands, faux wedding announcements and apparel as well as beer, wine and champagne. Guests are also encouraged to take photographs in the photo booth which will post pictures to Facebook and Twitter.

Three package options are available, ranging from simple to a more elaborate affair, each includes a 20-minute ceremony, champagne poppers and Molla Space eraser rings dispensed from a gumball machine located in the chapel’s retail area.

  •  Hitched In a Hurry Package – $US80: Wedding Ceremony 2 Sofia Coppola Champagne Cans 2 Molla Space Eraser Rings 1 Photo in Photo Booth Gift Bag
  • On a Whim Package – $US25: Wedding Ceremony Silk Flower Bouquet 6 pack of Sofia Coppola Champagne 2 Molla Space Easer Rings 2 Photos in Photo Booth Party Favors 2 Cake Tops 1 Logo T-Shirt Gift Bag
  • Going to the Chapel Package – $US195: Wedding Ceremony Silk Flower Bouquet 1 Bottle of Sofia Coppola Champagne 2 Molla Space Easer Rings 2 Photos in Photo Booth Party Favors 6 Cake Tops 2 Logo T-Shirts Gift Bag  Marquee Hotel Guest List for 4 people

The wedding chapel hours are; Sunday-Wednesday, 12pm-10pm; Thursday-Saturday, 12pm-12am. Call 702-698-7640 or visit www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com. Legally binding ceremonies will cost an additional $US90. Group weddings are available for an additional fee. www.visitlasvegas.com.au.

If you are still feeling frosty about commitment, Barry, I’d suggest you join a dance troupe, put on a headdress, wax your legs and learn to do the splits. Harriet will never find you but the chihuahuas might sniff you out. Send them to Palm Springs for the honeymoon and you should be fine.
Graciously yours, Sally
